The route

Most people climb Skelder Pike from the south on the busy path. We go the other way, up the long north ridge from Ulthwaite, where you can walk all morning without seeing another group.

The ridge is grassy at first, then rocky and pathless for the last two kilometres to the summit at 891 metres. We come down the south path and the minibus picks us up at the foot of the valley.

Who it’s for

Strong walkers who are comfortable on rough ground and with a long day. It’s our toughest day walk.
